Zuse Short Bio

Konrad Zuse (June 22, 1910 – December 18, 1995) was a German engineer and a pioneer of computing. His most outstanding achievement was to finish the first computer controlled by programs that worked, the Z3 in 1941. This may have been the “first computer”, although there are discrepancies in this sense because, if some subtleties are considered, such as Zuse’s machine was not general purpose, maybe it is not. He also designed a high-level programming language, Plankalkül, supposedly in 1945, although it was a theoretical contribution, since language was not implemented in his life and had no direct influence on the first developed languages. He also founded the first computer company in 1946 and built the Z4, which in 1950 became the first computer to be marketed. Due to World War II, Zuse’s initial work went unnoticed outside of Germany. Possibly the first documented influence of Zuse on a foreign company was the acquisition of patents by IBM in 1946.

There is a replica of the Z3 and the Z4 in the Deutsches Museum in Munich and another replica of the Z3 in an art museum in Karlsruhe, the Zentrum für Kunst und Medientechnologie (ZKM), which is the only interactive interactive art museum of the world.
