Yuri Vladimirovich Andropov (in Russian, Юрий Владимирович Андропов , Yury Vladimirovich Andropov; June 2Jul./ June 15 de 1914greg.-February 9, 1984) was a Soviet politician and the General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from November 12, 1982 until his death, fifteen months later.

After joining the Communist Party in 1939, he held various positions within it. In 1954 he was appointed ambassador to Hungary, a position he held until 1957 and, according to historians, would play an important role in crushing the rebellion that was taking place against the communist government in 1956. After returning to Moscow, he continued his career leading the way. Department of Relations with the Communist and Workers Parties of the Socialist Countries until 1967, the year in which he was appointed director of the KGB and would be in charge of this agency until 1982.

After the death of Leonid Brezhnev in 1982, he was elected General Secretary of the CPSU and a year later President of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union. Its short mandate was oriented in a reformist sense, trying to lighten the weight of the bureaucracy and to revitalize the economy and the administration of the country, gravely stagnant during the Brezhnev era; However, health problems kept him away from political activity and he died without major reforms.He disappeared from public events in August 1983 and after his death a few months later he was replaced by Konstantin Chernenko.
