Yohji_Yamamoto’s Biography

After graduating in Law from Keiō University in 1966, she continued her fashion design studies at the Bunka Fukusō Gakuin. After having presented his own pret-a-porter creations in 1977, he debuted in Paris in 1981. Yamamoto quickly became one of the most influential stylists in the haute couture scene. Its main clothing lines, Yohji Yamamoto (unisex) and Y’s, were highly commercially successful, especially in Tokyo, although the two brands are sold in stores in Paris, London and other cities.

In 1989, the director Wim Wenders made a documentary about the life and profession of Yamamoto, entitled Apuntes de moda y viajes.

In more recent years, Yamamoto has made several collaborations with brands such as Adidas – a line of sportswear called Y-3-, Hermès, Mikimoto and Mandarina Duck. In addition, he has collaborated with artists as diverse as Elton John, Placebo, Takeshi Kitano – for whom he has made costumes for the films Brother, Dolis and Zatoichi-, Pina Bausch and Heiner Müller.

Among the clients of Yamamoto are Herbie Hancock, Chris Lowe, Pete Wentz, Steve McQueen, stylist Donna Karan and actor Justin Theroux. Yamamoto has also designed the costumes for Jean-Michel Jarre’s concerts.

The style

«Style is the art of mixing, putting into value and aesthetically governing what one loves. As far as I’m concerned, I like to associate the chic of the creators with what I found in the Flea market. Choosing is our last freedom. Bringing clothes of certain stylists is like changing your life. When someone says to me: “Yohji, I want to take your clothes”, I answer: “Be careful, do not trust, it’s not that simple” ». (Yohji Yamamoto interview in Elle 1999).

Yamamoto’s style is defined as «post-atomic fashion». Since 1983, Yamamoto fashion, along with that of Rei Kawakubo, begins to influence the western catwalks. Since the mid-80s, he is recognized by his colleagues as a ‘teacher’. In the 1997 collections he pays tribute to Chanel and Dior, investing his own innovative tendencies and recovering canons and styles of traditional fashion.
