Yiruma , artistic name of Lee Ru-ma (Seoul, South Korea, February 15, 1978), is a South Korean composer of piano melodies. He is married to Son Hye-im (Miss Korea).

Yiruma’s Biography

Lee Ru-ma was born and raised in South Korea, and was educated in England. Yiruma began playing the piano at the age of five, and later moved to London at the age of eleven, with the purpose of studying at the Purcell Music School. In December of 1996 participated in the album The Musicians of Purcell. After graduating from the Purcell School of Music in July 1997, Yiruma continued his musical aspirations and completed a great composition of King College London in June 2000. While studying at Kings College, this promising pianist released his first album Love Scene at through DECCA records.

Also, during his stay at the university, he participated in a musical tour in Europe. In a historic landmark for his country, Yiruma was the first Korean artist to receive an invitation to perform at MIDEM 2002 in Cannes, France. At the beginning of his career, his albums were released in Europe and Asia, the same ones that are already available internationally through various online sources such as iTunes, Amazon, and Stomp Records, record company of Yiruma.

In 2001 he released his most popular album to date, First Love. It features his # 1 sales in River Flows in You and since then this work has been published in two other albums. Yiruma released his third production, From The Yellow Room, in 2003. Before his official release he had already sold 30,000 copies and was the top ranked in several of the most popular music charts, including Yes24, Phono and Hot Tracks. His tour of 12 cities in Korea was a sold-out show, as well as his November concert at the Seoul National Arts Center.

His fourth album was POEMUSIC. In 2006, the following year, he composed the main theme of a popular KBS drama, Vals de Primavera. On his fifth album, H.I.S Monologue, he used a prepared piano. Yiruma has composed soundtracks for musicals, films and plays. Despite being successful in the music industry, Yiruma decided to serve in the South Korean army. Therefore, in 2006 he resigned his British citizenship and enlisted in the Korean Navy. At the end of his service in the Korean Navy, he undertook the Yiruma Come Back Tour, Ribbonized, in 20 cities throughout Korea. On the other hand, on January 1, 2009, he became a music DJ of KBS1FM Yiruma from around the world.

In September 2010, he canceled his contract with Stomp Music and signed with Sony Music Entertainment of Korea. Stomp Music then filed a court order to ban the sale of Yiruma’s music, and the petition was accepted by the court in April 2011. Immediately, Yiruma filed an objection against the court order and the court’s verdict finally favored Yiruma.

Yiruma is well known all over the world, and his albums are sold throughout Asia, as well as in the United States and Europe. His most famous pieces are Kiss the Rain, Love Me and River Flows in You.
