X Japan (エ ッ ク ス · ジ ャ パ ン, ekkusu Japan?) is a Japanese metal band formed in 1982 in Tateyama by drummer Yoshiki and vocalist Toshi. Its predominantly power / speed metal sound with symphonic elements, later leaned towards a progressive sound with an emphasis on ballads. In addition to being one of the first Japanese acts to achieve commercial success while still in an indie stage, the group is widely credited as one of the pioneers of visual kei, a movement among Japanese musicians comparable to western glam.

Originally called X (エ ッ ク ス Ekkusu), in 1988 they released their debut album Vanishing Vision under Yoshiki’s Extasy Records a year after completing their line-up including bassist Taiji, lead guitarist Hide and rhythm guitarist Pata . They achieved great success in 1989 with the release of their second and largest debut album Blue Blood. After 1991, Jealousy, Taiji left the band in early 1992. He was replaced by Heath and the group changed its name to X Japan before producing the mini album Art of Life (1993), which is composed exclusively of the track of 29 minutes In 1995, the group abandoned most of its original visual kei aesthetic in favor of a more casual appearance and launched Dahlia (1996), which like its previous two albums debuted at number one. X Japan held its last concert at the Tokyo Dome on December 31, 1997, making it the last of five consecutive New Year’s Eve concerts the group held at the stadium.
