Wyatt Earp was famous in the American West for his extreme hardness in dealing with those who broke the law, incorruptible and daring in their procedures. His fame was achieved in Tombstone (Arizona). During his management as a marshal he lost one of his brothers and another was crippled by the revenge of his enemies.
Wyatt Earp’s Biography
Wyatt Earp was born in Monmouth, Illinois. He was the third son of the farmers Virginia Ann Cooksey and Nicholas Porter Earp, an ex-soldier married in second nuptials.
His career began in the town of Lamar, Missouri, in 1870; before that he was a cowboy and a buffalo hunter. In 1871 he married by engagement with a woman named Urilla Sutherland and was a relative of the wives of his brothers. His two-year marriage ended unhappily when his wife died in childbirth with his son. It would be the only time he would marry.
In 1876 he joined the police in Dodge City and in 1878 was assistant to the commissioner Charles Basset. Following the death of Superintendent Ed Masterson during his absence, Wyatt learned that if he was not drastic, decisive and quick in his procedures he would not win the respect of the bandits and that could cost him his life. Earp became friends with Doc Holliday, a dentist turned poker player, who would be his most faithful friend.
In 1878 he became involved in concubinage with a prostitute named Mattie Blaylock, a relationship that lasted until 1882; Earp abandoned her because of her alcoholism and her fondness for laudanum. At the same time he became friends with a dancer of Jewish origin named Josephine Sarah Marcus. In 1879 he moved to Tombstone, Arizona, with the intention of being a farmer. However, his brothers Virgil and Morgan occupied positions in the police and they recruited Wyatt as special police; Later he would be the marshal of that town.
Due to the harshness of its management, it won irreconcilable enemies like the Clanton brothers and McLaury, who considered the Earp as intruders in their domains. These brothers had many lawsuits with the Earp and in the end they ended up in the shooting in the O.K. Corral, where two of McLaury’s brothers and one Clanton lost their lives. As a result of this shooting, a trial was held against the Earp and Doc Holliday, whose opinion was the release of all the accused due to lack of merit in the murder charge. This triggered the revenge between shadows of the Clanton and the McLaury, who killed Morgan Earp in the back and left Virgil disabled. Wyatt took revenge on them by killing them in a raid called the “Earp cavalcade”.
Wyatt Earp has lived with Josephine Sarah Marcus since 1882, a dancer of Jewish origin and ex-commander Johnny Behan. It was his sentimental partner until his death, in 1929.
Wyatt Earp died of natural causes at age 80, on January 13, 1929, in Los Angeles, California.
