Woodrow Tracy Harrelson (Midland, Texas, July 23, 1961), better known as Woody Harrelson , is an American film and television actor known for his role of waiter Woody Boyd in the Cheers series of the 1980s, with which he won an Emmy Award. He has also acted in films such as Natural Born Killers, The People vs. Larry Flynt (for which he was nominated for an Oscar for best actor), the film adaptation of A Look into the Dark and the acclaimed True Detective series.

During the 1990s, Harrelson began as an activist in favor of the legalization of marijuana and hemp in the United States. He has also fought for the protection of Pacific redwoods. He is also a pacifist and has been part of various protests against the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

Woody Harrelson was born in Midland, Texas, in 1961, the son of Charles Harrelson and Diane Lou Oswald, who divorced in 1964. He has two brothers, Jordan Tracy Harrelson and Brett Tracy Harrelson, a professional motorcycling pilot as well as an actor. During his childhood, he was diagnosed with dyslexia, hyperactivity and psychological disorder, and his father, a professional hit man, was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of a federal judge in 1979 and spent most of Woody’s childhood imprisoned for various reasons. Harrelson grew up in Lebanon, Ohio, with his mother, a deeply religious woman, studied at Lebanon High School and the Hanover University of the Liberal Arts in Indiana, was a member of the Sigma Chi fraternity and graduated in performing arts and English in 1983. Harrelson has English, Scottish, German and Dutch ancestry.


After graduation he moved to New York and began studying at the Biloxi Blues by Neil Simon. In 1985 he was chosen for the role of Woody Boyd, the naive and friendly waiter of the television series Cheers, with whom he won an Emmy, among other awards. His first performance in the cinema was in the film Wild Cats of 1986 with Goldie Hawn. He continued working with small roles in the cinema until the love show he starred with Michael J. Fox in the 1991 film, Doc Hollywood.
