William Clark Styron, Jr. (Newport News, Virginia, June 11, 1925-Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, November 1, 2006) was an American writer.
In addition to his memoir That Visible Darkness (Darkness Visible, 1990), Styron is best known for three novels: Lieutenant in the Dark (Lie Down in Darkness, 1951), written at twenty-five; the winner of the Pulitzer Prize The Confessions of Nat Turner (The Confessions of Nat Turner, 1967), narrated by Nat Turner, the leader of a slave revolt that took place in Virginia in 1831; and Sophie’s (1979) decision, which deals with the Holocaust issue.
