William Rene Shea (Quebec, Canada, 1937) is a historian and philosopher of science.

He is a professor at the University of Padua, holder of the Galilean Chair of History of Science, created in 1992, unique in the world with this name.

Shea is married and has five children.

He graduated from the University of Cambridge and was a researcher at Harvard University; He has taught at the University of Ottawa, McGill University in Montreal and the University of Strasbourg, before receiving his appointment in Italy in 2003.

Shea is a world-renowned science historian and is considered an authority in relation to the scientific thinking of the modern era. He is also interested in the history of the scientific revolution and bioethics.

He was President of the Permanent Humanities Commission of the European Science Foundation, an association of sixty of the main research councils of twenty-two countries in Europe; belongs to several academies including the European Academy, the Royal Society of Canada and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences (the commission awarded the Nobel Prize). Shea is former president of the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science and the International Academy of the History of Science.

He is the author and editor of several studies (about 30 books), particularly around Galileo, the Galileo case and the beginnings of modern science and author of more than 145 academic articles that have appeared in ten languages. < / p>
