Will I Am’s Biography

William Adams (called “William James Adams Jr.” on his birth certificate) He was born in East Los Angeles and raised in the Estrada Courts home in the Boyle Heights neighborhood, where he and his family were among the few African Americans who lived in a predominantly Hispanic community William Adams never met his father, and grew up with his mother, Debra (Cain), who encourages him to be unique and avoid according to the tendencies of other young people from his neighborhood in the east of Los Angeles. She encouraged him to start working on his musical career by sending him to the public schools of the rich in West, Los Angeles. While attending Palisades Charter High School, Will.i.am became the best friend of apl.de.ap, who would also be a future member of the Black Eyed Peas. In high school, will.i.am and apl.de.ap made presentations in clubs and soon joined three other artists to form the rap group with social conscience. Atban Klann caught the attention of rapper Eazy-E and was offered to sign for his label, Ruthless Records.

Adams used to attend raves during high school. He later said that his story with rave culture is why he chose a more electro sound for The E.N.D. and The Beginning of The Black Eyed Peas. Despite the use of Electro and house music, will.i.am prefers to separate clandestine from pop. In an article with the Los Angeles Times, he mentions that the secret about the whereabouts of raves is what made him delirious about something special and different from the culture:

“The clandestine is much bigger than the surface, that’s what people do not understand.”
