Wendy_Padbury’s Biography

Padbury rose to fame in 1966, when she joined the cast of the long-lived television series Associated Television Crossroads, after finishing second in the new talent show Search For a Star. She played the role of Stephanie “Stevie” Harris , daughter of host of the protagonist of the program, Meg Mortimer (Noele Gordon).

She was chosen as the new companion of the Second Doctor, Zoe Heriot, in Doctor Who in 1968. She became a close friend of her colleagues, Frazer Hines and Patrick Troughton. Padbury is fond of many stories about the heavy jokes that were spent on each other during rehearsals.

His connection to Doctor Who after leaving the program (at the same time as Hines and Troughton) did not quite end. He appeared in Doctor Who and the Daleks in the Seven Keys to Doomsday (1974), a play at the Adelphi Theater in London based on the series, in which he played a companion named Jenny, with Trevor Martin as the Doctor. Then he made an appearance, again with Hines and Troughton, on the 20th anniversary special, The Five Doctors.

Other works include co-presenting the second season of Score With The Scaffold. She appeared in three seasons of the Freewheeler children’s adventure show, playing the role of Sue Craig, and made a series of appearances in the Emmerdale TV series (then still known for its original title Emmerdale Farm), once again coinciding with Frazer Hines, one of the protagonists of that program.

In 1970, Padbury appeared in the cult British horror film Blood on Satan’s Claw as the unfortunate Cathy Vespers, and coincidentally, appeared alongside actor Anthony Ainley, who a decade later would begin to play The Master in Doctor Who , including in the episode mentioned above, The Five Doctors.

In an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, Padbury explained that he no longer appeared in Doctor Who conventions or talked about his time in the program, because he thought that he had nothing new to say about that time. However, after retiring, she reappeared at the conventions, and was invited to Gallifrey One in 2009, where she talked about how she first met the new Doctor, Matt Smith.

He is currently retired and lives in France, having worked in a theatrical agency, having among his clients Nicholas Courtney, Colin Baker and Mark Strickson, all former Doctor Who actors. It was she who discovered Matt Smith at the National Youth Theater.

Padbury was for a time married to Melvyn Hayes, with whom she had two daughters, Joanna (born in 1974) and also actress Charlotte (born in 1977).
