Walter Connolly (April 8, 1887 – May 28, 1940) was a film actor of American nationality, with a career of almost fifty films shot between 1914 and 1939, being the best known of them It Happened One Night.

Walter_Connolly’s Biography

Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Connolly was a successful stage actor who performed in twenty-two productions represented on the Broadway circuit between 1916 and 1935, including among them the works Six Characters in Search of an Author, by Luigi Pirandello, and Uncle Vania, by Antón Chéjov.

His first performance in the cinema came with two silent films, The Marked Woman (1914) and A Soldier’s Oath (1915), filming in 1930 his first sound film, Many Happy Returns. However, his career in Hollywood did not really begin until 1932, when he performed in four productions. His usual characters were exasperated businessmen or journalists, often portraying the father of the lead actress, as happened in It Happened One Night (1934, starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert), Broadway Bill (1934, with Warner Baxter and Myrna Loy), and Libeled Lady (1936, with William Powell and Loy again). Other notable roles were the uncle of the character of Paul Muni in The Good Earth (1937), one of the two men who found Huckleberry Finn in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (1939), and the adviser of General Yen in The Bitter Tea of General Yen (1933).

Connolly did mostly cast roles, but was an occasional protagonist in The League of Frightened Men (1937, playing Nero Wolfe), 5th Ave Girl (1939, produced by RKO Pictures, with Ginger Rogers), and The Great Victor Herbert (1939, his last film, in which he played the title character).

As a radio actor, Connolly played the title character in The Adventures of Charlie Chan, an NBC Radio program broadcast between 1932 and 1938.

In addition to acting, Connolly was fond of the collection of old books and theatrical programs. He was married to the actress Nedda Harrigan from 1923 until the time of his death, which occurred in 1940 in Beverly Hills, California, due to a stroke. He was buried in New St. Joseph Cemetery in Cincinnati. He had had a daughter, Ann, born in 1924 and deceased in 2006.
