Walter Andrew Brennan (July 25, 1894 – September 21, 1974) was an American actor, known for being one of only three men (along with Jack Nicholson and Daniel Day-Lewis) ) winners of three interpretive Oscar.

Walter Brennan’s Biography

Brennan was born in Lynn, Massachusetts. He was the second of the three children of a family of Irish immigrants. He studied engineering at the Rindge Technical High School in Cambridge, Massachusetts. After staying at the front in Europe during the First World War, in 1923 he obtained his first role as an extra. During the decade of the 20s he made his fortune in real estate but lost most of his savings due to the Great Depression.

Already in the decade of the 30 his first important papers arrive that would take him to belong to the immortals of the cinema. His roles often involved the interpretation of older characters because, due to an accident in 1932, he lost most of his teeth (that is why he wore false teeth as can be seen in Río Bravo ), as well as the hair loss and thinness invited to think he was older than he really was. His Oscars received them for the films “Rivals” (1936) directed by Howard Hawks; “Kentucky” (1938) directed by David Butler and “The Stranger” (1940) directed by William Wyler. These three awards made him the first actor to win three Academy Awards. He was nominated on another occasion, for “Sergeant York” (1942). In addition Walter Brennan’s career did not go into decline at any time and what is more, in the 50s and 60s he participated in television. His contribution to film and television means the appearance of more than 240 roles over almost five decades.

He was the eternal companion of the hero, as in the cases of Gary Cooper, John Wayne or Humphrey Bogart among others. He married the actress Ruth Wells (08/12/1897 – 01/12/1997), a marriage that would last until the end of their days, they had three children, a girl (Ruth Brennan) and two children (Andrew and Arthur Brennan) . Film critics say his big performance was in Howard Hawks’ “Rio Bravo” (1959), in which he played an old crippled partner of John Wayne and Dean Martin.

Walter Brennan died of pulmonary emphysema at the age of eighty. His remains rest in the cemetery San Fernando Mission, Los Angeles. For his contribution to the television industry, Walter Brennan has a star on the Walk of Fame at 6501 Hollywood Boulevard.
