Virginia Apgar (June 7, 1909 – August 7, 1974) was an American doctor who specialized in anesthesia and pediatrics. He was a leader in the field of anesthesiology and teratology, and founded the field of neonatology. For the general public, however, it is best known for having created the Apgar Test, the method used to assess the health of newborns that has dramatically reduced infant mortality worldwide.
Virginia Apgar graduated from Mount Holyoke College in 1929, and from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons (Columbia P & S) in 1933.
In 1949, Apgar became the first woman full-time professor at Columbia P & S, and also performed clinical and research work at the Sloane Hospital for Women, and in 1959 she earned a master’s degree in public health. at Johns Hopkins University.
