Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz , known as Vik Muniz (São Paulo, Brazil, 1961), is a visual artist living in New York. Muniz began his career as a sculptor in the 1980s. Muniz was best known in 1997 for his portraits of the Chocolate series and in 2006 the portraits with rubbish.
In 2010, the documentary Waste Land, directed by Lucy Walker, featured Muniz’s work at one of the largest garbage dumps in the world, Jardim Gramacho, on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro. The film was nominated for the Oscar for Best Documentary at the 83rd Academy Awards.
Vik Muniz often appropriates the images that serve as the basis for his works of art with works by other renowned artists. For example, Muniz uses jelly and peanut butter in the creation of the work Mona Lisa Double, after Warhol, 1999, based on a 1963 screen print by pop artist Andy Warhol and that, in turn It was an appropriation of Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa. In 1982 he finished his works made with small pieces of paper creating an optical illusion in the viewer.
