Van Dyke Parks’s Biography
Van Dyke Parks was born on June 3, 1941 in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He studied at the American School Boychoir in Princeton, New Jersey.study clarinet and work as a child actor in television. He was musically trained at the University of Pennsylvania. A year after graduating, in 1964 MGM Records signed it, and released “Come to the Sunshine”, but without success. Being a session musician, he played for Sonny & amp; Cher, as well as Paul Revere & amp; the Raiders, by producer Terry Melcher.
He was hired by Brian Wilson as a lyricist for his future album SMiLE. They came to record several fragments of increasingly extensive songs, both instrumental and vocal, that Wilson was merging in various ways and versions, becoming increasingly strange and experimental.In the autobiography of Wilson, says that his first impressions of Parks was that: “he is a skinny child with a singular perspective” and that “he has a fondness for amphetamines”. Brian Wilson tried to convince Parks to rewrite the lyrics to “Good Vibrations,” but Parks said, “It does not make sense to get into another’s problem.” Many members of The Beach Boys opposed the new lyrics, particularly Mike. Love.
After Brian Wilson left the SMiLE project, Parks was attracted to the Warner Bros. label Producing his first single called “Donovan’s Colors” under the pseudonym George Washington Brown.
He edited a live album in 1998, in the coming decade, he collaborated back with Brian Wilson, who finally unveiled his finished achievement, Smile, with new recordings released by the Nonesuch label in 2004. Two years later, Parks began contributing to the lyric with another Brian Wilson project, That Lucky Old Sun.
Parks has produced, arranged, or played an instrument in albums of artists like Tim Buckley, Delaney Bramlett, U2, Randy Newman, Harry Nilsson, The Byrds, Cher, Rufus Wainwright, Sam Phillips, Ringo Starr, Frank Black, The Beau Brummels, The Manhattan Transfer, Medicine, Keith Moon, Sixpence None the Richer, Carly Simon, Little Feat, T-Bone Burnett and Stan Ridgway.
He was in charge of directing the audiovisual department of Warner Bros Records in September 1970.
