Valentino Garavani’s Biography

Valentino became interested in fashion while at Voghera school in Lombardy, Italy, when he was apprenticed to his aunt Rosa and local designer Ernestina Salvadeo. At age 17, Valentino moved to Paris to pursue his interest with the help of his mother Teresa de Biaggi and his father Mauro Garavani. There he studied at the École des Beaux-Arts and at the Chambre syndicale de la Couture Parisienne.

His first opportunity in the French capital was with Jacques Fath and then with Balenciaga. He then found work with Jean Desses, where he had the opportunity to help him design the iconic style of Countess Jacqueline de Ribes. After that work, he joined Guy Laroche for 2 years. When that period ended, he decided to return to his native country in 1959, where he set up his own fashion house on Via Condotti, Rome, with the backing of his father and a partner. Thus began his long professional relationship with the city of Rome.

Broadly speaking, Valentino’s style can be summarized as a continuation without breaking with the tradition of high fashion of the twentieth century. It is an alternative to the androgynous and rectilinear style of Giorgio Armani and also to the more daring exuberance of Karl Lagerfeld, John Galliano, Jean-Paul Gaultier and other more groundbreaking designers. Valentino insists on the femininity of the woman, in highlighting her silhouette and in using luxurious fabrics and bright colors. Within a high level of finish and qualities, Valentino is rather conservative.

Around 1998, Valentino sold his company but continued to direct it. However, a few years later it was rumored that he planned to retire. Finally he did it with a historic parade in Paris, on January 23, 2008. Previously, in the second half of 2007, on the occasion of his 45-year career, the City of Rome had offered a retrospective, as a tribute, where it was possible to review his creations in an exceptional setting, the Ara Pacis of Emperor Caesar Augustus.

In 2009, the film Valentino: The Last Emperor, a documentary shot over a year, that unveiled the professional and private life of the designer. He also made a cameo in the movie El diablo se de Prada (2006).

At the end of 2011 he launched, in collaboration with Puig, his new perfume “Valentina” replacing his two previous perfumes “Valentino V” and “Rock and Rose”. The commercial was starred by the Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen and directed by Johan Renck.
