Merkel physically resembled actress Lillian Gish, and this resemblance allowed her to start her career as a Gish double in the 1920 film Way Down East (she also worked as Gish’s double in The Wind in 1928). He worked on some silent films, including Love’s Old Sweet Song (1923) filmed by Lee DeForest with the Phonofilm sound-on-film recording system, and co-starring Louis Wolheim and Donald Gallaher. However, most of the time he worked on Broadway.

Merkel returned to Hollywood and achieved her greatest success with the arrival of sound films. He played Ann Rutledge in Abraham Lincoln (1930), directed by D.W. Griffith. During the thirties, Merkel became a famous secondary in several films, in the role of the protagonist’s funny friend, accompanying actresses such as Jean Harlow, Carole Lombard, Loretta Young and Dorothy Lamour.

Merkel was an MGM actress from 1932 to 1938, appearing in about twelve films in a year, often “on loan” for other studios. His career in cinema was in decline during the decade of the 40s. He continued working but in smaller productions. In 1950 she was the lead actress in a William Bendix baseball comedy, Kill the Umpire. It was an amazing success. For a while, she starred in the roles of a middle-aged woman and a spinster aunt, and in 1956 she won a Tony Award for her role in the Broadway play The Ponder Hart. He played an important role in the 1959 MGM movie The Mating Game as the wife of Paul Douglas and mother of Debbie Reynolds. She was nominated for the Academy Awards for best supporting actress for her role in Summer and Smoke (1961) Her last role in the Elvis Presley film Spinout (1966). One Merkel has a star on the Hollywood Walk of the Stars at No. 6230 on Hollywood Boulevard. He died at 82.
