He participated in a dozen period films and was noted for embodying dramatic and romantic roles. His pleasant masculine appearance was accompanied by a great sensitivity and warmth that, added to his great interpretative versatility, allowed him to sit among the great classical actors of cinema.
Tyrone Edmund Power Jr. was born in Cincinnati (Ohio) on May 5, 1914. He was the son of Irish actors with a great career on the boards. In his childhood, Tyrone was a very sick boy, and his mother, “Patia” Power (born Helen Emma Reaume), was his great support, since his father, Tyrone Power, Sr., was absent due to his performances in New York.
In 1915 his sister Anne was born, and in 1920 his mother filed for divorce. Tyrone, despite the separation, professed great respect and admiration for his father and decided to follow in his footsteps.
By that time, Tyrone Jr. enrolled in drama school in New York and his beginnings were in the theater, before the cinema tempted him in 1930. By that time, his father, Tyrone Power, He offered to be a guide of his dramatic career, thus ending a long-term estrangement. Unfortunately, his father would die shortly after a sudden heart attack during the filming of The Miraculous Man, at the feet of his son. Tyrone Jr. did not give up on his career; he knocked on many doors and, thanks to his father’s good contacts, they were open to him.
He made several extra roles from 1932 to 1935. His first roles as the first actor in 1936, was a leading man and became known for having great appeal and warm character.
In 1939 he married the French actress Suzanne Georgette Charpentier, known as Annabella, and separated from her in 1948.
In 1949 he met the Mexican Linda Christian, a beautiful and sparkling actress, and married her. The relationship began to deteriorate as Linda Christian gossiped in the Hollywood media about the friendship of Power with César Romero, giving rise to hundreds of yellow pages.
In 1956 she separated from Linda, who took her daughters, Romina Francesca Power (born in 1951) and Taryn Stephanie Power (born in 1953), with her to Europe. Romina became a famous Italian singer and Taryn an American actress.
Power, along with Ethel Merman, in the film Alexander’s Ragtime Band (1938).
In May 1958 he married for the third and last time, with the young Deborah Jean Montgomery Minardos, in a nuptial union that lasted only half a year, and fruit of which was born the third and only son of “Ty”, Tyrone Power IV, in February 1959, being posthumous son of the actor.
He had a close friendship with the Hispanic actor César Romero (recognized as gay) for many years. This provoked all kinds of rumors in the tabloid press about the supposed homosexuality of Tyrone Power, a rumor that until now lacks objective foundations. He was awarded other female and male partners, including Errol Flynn, Marlon Brando, Lana Turner and Anita Ekberg.
He died prematurely, just 44 years old, of a heart attack in Madrid, on November 15, 1958, while filming the movie Solomon and the Queen of Saba, next to Gina Lollobrigida. The scenes filmed in the foreground by Power were unpublished, returning to shoot with Yul Brynner in the role of Solomon; not so the scenes in which he was seen in the distance, which took advantage.
