Tracy Chevalier (Washington, DC, October 19, 1962) is a successful writer of historical novels. His career began with the book The Blue of the Virgin but he achieved fame with his novel La joven de la perla, a book based on the creation of the famous painting The Young Woman of the Pearl by Vermeer. The film based on the novel received three nominations to the Academy Award in 2004.
Chevalier was born on October 19, 1962 in Washington, D.C. She is the daughter of Douglas and Helen (née Werner) Chevalier. His father was a photographer for The Washington Post for more than 30 years. His mother died in 1970, when Chevalier was eight years old, his older sister, Kim Chevalier, reside in Soulan, France; and her brother, Michael Chevalier, lives in Salida, Colorado, and in 2013, Chevalier lives in London with her husband, Jonathan Drori and their son, Jacob.
He graduated from high school at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School in Bethesda. After receiving the “Bachelor in Arts” in English from Oberlin College, in 1984 she moved to England where she worked for several years as a publisher of book references. In 1993 he left his job and started a postgraduate course in creative writing at the University of East Anglia. His tutors in the course were the novelists Malcolm Bradbury and Rose Tremain.
