Townes_Van_Zandt’s Biography

Townes Van Zandt was born in the city of Fort Worth, in the state of Texas, in a wealthy family related to the oil business. He was a descendant of Isaac Van Zandt, who had an important political role at the time when Texas was an independent state.

He began his career as a folk singer in the mid-1960s, playing in clubs such as Sand Mountain and Old Quarter in Houston (Texas). In his early days he met other Texan musicians who would have a great influence on his work, coming from both the country (in the case of his friend Guy Clark) and the blues (the important influences that Lightnin ‘Hopkins had on his style with the guitar). Thanks to another Texas musician, Mickey Newbury, he had the opportunity to leave the circuit of bars and clubs in which he moved and travel to Nashville to record a record. His first LP, For the Sake of the Song, was released in 1968; in the next five years he released five other albums (Our Mother the Mountain, Townes Van Zandt, Delta Momma Blues, High, Low and in Between and The Late Great Townes Van Zandt), where some of his best songs are, such as “For the Sake of the Song “,” To Live’s to Fly, “” Tecumseh Valley “and” Pancho and Lefty “(later very popular in the version that Willie Nelson made of it).

In 1977 he signed a contract with another label, Tomato Records, with which he edited one of his best albums, Live At The Old Quarter, a double vinyl that includes a concert recorded four years before in the Old Quarter in Houston. The album is an excellent example of what Townes Van Zandt’s concerts were, peppered with interventions of a bittersweet humor. The following year the same label published Flyin ‘Shoes. However, then almost a decade passed in which Van Zandt did not make any new recording.

During all this time, however, Van Zandt continued to act. At the beginning of the 80s, two of his compositions, “Pancho and Lefty” and “If I Needed You” became hits, in the voices, respectively, of Willie Nelson and Emmylou Harris. In 1987 the Sugar Hill label released their next album, entitled At My Window, and another live recording, Live and Obscure. At the beginning of the 90s he embarked on a tour with the Cowboy Junkies, for whom he wrote the song “Cowboy Junkies Lament”, to which the group corresponded with another dedicated to him, “Townes Blues”.

In the 90s new albums appeared: the Roadsongs album (1994), the studio album No Deeper Blue (1994). He died unexpectedly on January 1, 1997, of a heart attack.

At the beginning of the 2000s there was a resurgence of interest in his music. Townes Van Zandt has had a great influence on outstanding musicians of what is known as alternative country, especially Steve Earle or the Spanish Nacho Vegas. The latter participated in March 2004 in the concert-tribute to the sixtieth anniversary of the birth of Van Zandt that the promoter / festival Waiting for Waits organized in Palma de Mallorca
