Toru Iwatani’s Biography

Tōru Iwatani was born in Meguro near Tokyo, Japan. He joined the Namco software company in 1977, where he began his career in the video game business. At that time, he worked with the idea of creating a game called “Puck-Man” and in 1980, together with the programmer Shigeo Funaki and three other employees of the company Namco, he finished shaping the game. It was shown to the Japanese market on May 10 of that year, where it became a real success. This event captured the attention of videogame maker Midway, who bought the rights to market the game in the United States under the name of “Pac-Man”, to avoid the possibility of someone modifying the ‘P’ of Puck with a ‘F’ (forming Fuck-man an insult in the English language). Due to its innovative concept and the continuity and acceptance that the game had throughout the world, the Pacman is considered one of the most classic and well-known videogames of all time. Iwatani returned to his Pac-Man roots in 2007 when he developed the Pac-Man Championship Edition for the Xbox 360 video game console.

Iwatani created other well-known video games, including Libble Rabble, but none of them approached the success and resonance of the renowned Pac-Man. Until 2007 he continued working at the company Namco, in which he was promoted several positions to the role of supervisor of general administration. Since April 2005 he has been a visiting professor of the subject ‘Study of Character Design’ at the Osaka University of Arts.

Iwatani left Namco in 2007 to devote full-time to teaching at the Polytechnic University of Tokyo.

Professor Iwatani was included as a character and creator of Pac-Man in the movie Pixels of 2015. He was played by actor Denis Akiyama.
