Topo Gigio

Topoyiyo (in Italian [tɔːpo dʒiːdʒo]) is a mouse (“topo” means “mouse” in Italian), a small puppet of children’s television.

It was created by Maria Perego in 1958. Its first televising appearance was in 1959 in the Italian program Canzonissima and its original voice was interpreted by the actor Peppino Mazzullo.

The animation work of this character was famous, as was his “fall of his eyes”, when he was embarrassed or wanted to achieve something. Basically constructed of foam and dressed in small clothes whose style was evolving with the times, it was animated skillfully from behind while a black background hid those who were behind the scene.

In his television appearances, Topoyiyo talked with his human counterpart and told stories and sang songs, as they are:

  • “To the bed …”.
  • “In a forest in China”.
  • “I said it first, I said it first!”.
  • “I want to be like my dad”.

Among some features that it has shown are that:

  • Topoyiyo is considered a peaceful mouse.
  • Says prayers, including those addressed to “San Peppino”.
  • He has been a great admirer of Brigitte Bardot.

When Topoyiyo appeared originally on television, its programs were viewed in black and white, and later in color. His programs have been recorded on DVD.

They came to create dolls in their form for commercial sale, figurines (cards) and an abundant official and extraordinary memorabilia.
