Arana grew up in San Francisco (California) and studied classical theater at the prestigious American Conservatory Theater, before moving to New York and performing in off-Broadway productions. Later he would spend time traveling through Europe hitchhiking, finally arriving in Naples, where he worked in the art gallery of Lucio Amelio, getting to know Andy Warhol, Rauschenberg, Beuys, Richter, Longobardi, Clemente, Gilbert & amp; George, and many others. Andy Warhol painted him a portrait, which is now part of his extensive art collection. Arana has dual Italian and American nationality. He is married and has two children.
Arana has participated in more than 40 films, from big-budget Hollywood films to independent films, both in America and in Europe. His studio films include L.A. Confidential (1997), playing the role of Bruening, The Bodyguard (1992), playing Portman, the antagonist of Kevin Costner, The Hunt of the Red October (1990), as Loginov, the Russian saboteur, Tombstone (1993), the admiral Frank J. ‘Jack’ Fletchery, in Pearl Harbor (2001), and First Kid (1996). He was also Lazaro in Martin Scorsese’s controversial film, The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). Arana was also chosen to participate in the Sundance Wildflowers project (1999), an independent film by Melissa Painter, starring Darryl Hannah and Clea Duvall.
In 2000 he starred in the movie Gladiator, playing the character of Quintus. The film won five Oscars, including the best film. Arana shared the cast with Russell Crowe, Joaquin Phoenix, Connie Nielsen, Richard Harris, Derek Jacobi and Oliver Reed.
Arana has been a protagonist or supporting actor in more than thirty European productions for directors such as Lina Wertmuller, Liliana Cavan, Carlo Verdone, Michele Soavi and with the Japanese director Koreyishi Kurahara, with whom he made the production Toho See You. < / p>
On stage, Arana was a producer as well as a leading actor in the acclaimed company Falso Movimento, based in Naples, Italy. Under the supervision of Arana and artistic director Mario Martone (now a well-known film director in Italy), Falso Movimento won several awards including Best Work of the Year, Best Decorated, and also the famous Mondello Prize. The company toured all over the world, participating for nine years in the most prestigious festivals in the world, including those organized in London, Frankfurt, New York, Los Angeles, Madrid, Barcelona, Copenhagen, Stockholm and Jerusalem.
