Tom Berenger (born Thomas Michael Moore in Chicago, Illinois, May 31, 1949) is an American writer, producer and actor who won the Golden Globe.
He was born in Chicago as Thomas Michael Moore, son of a traveling salesman, lived in Puerto Rico until the age of 20. He studied journalism at the University of Missouri, but after graduation decided to dedicate himself to acting. During a time he acted in regional theaters, until in 1970 he moved to New York, where he participated in an opera musical and later got a leading role in a play.
His film debut was in 1976 in the film Rush It, an independent film production that has now been forgotten, except for its performers, who eventually became famous actors.
The following year he played a minor role as an assassin in Looking for Mr. Goodbar, which nonetheless drew attention positively for his interpretive solidity. In 1979 he played the main character in Butch and Sundance: The Early Days, a film that narrates the previous era of the film Two Men and a Destiny. With these performances Berenger showed that he could play both villains and heroes, which marked his career. The acting mark of Berenger in the 1980s was to portray characters of good looks who have a dark and unfathomable background.
In the 1980s Berenger achieved important successes, such as with the reunion of Lawrence Kasdan and with The Big Chill, an Oscar-nominated film; but the recognition came with Platoon, a film that earned him an Oscar nomination in 1986 and a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actor, for his strong portrayal of psychopathic sergeant Barnes.
More recently, Berenger has performed regularly in film, as well as on television, often as a supporting actor. In 1990 he began to dedicate himself to film production.
In 1993 he rubbed shoulders with Sharon Stone, then at the height of his fame after Basic Instinct, in the erotic intriguing film Sliver, which did not have the expected success. Also that year he made Sniper, where he plays Thomas Beckett, a lone sniper with ambiguous ideals, the success of this film gave rise to the Sniper saga in 2002 and 2004.
Berenger has been married four times. The fourth time he married Laura Moretti in 2012 and they are still together to this day. He has six children from his first three marriages.
In 2012 he won an Emmy Award for best supporting actor in the epic series Hatfields & amp; McCoys, playing Jim Vance.
