Federico Arturo Guízar Tolentino (Guadalajara, Jalisco, April 8, 1908 – San Antonio, Texas, December 24, 1999) was a Mexican actor considered the first film hero in Mexico, represented the beginning of the Mexican charro, considering himself as the first charro of Mexican cinema. his cousins were the composer Pepe Guízar and the actress Susana Guízar.
It was his father Don José María Guízar y Valencia, a native of Cotija de la Paz, Michoacán, brother of Bishop Rafael Guízar and Valencia (beatified by His Holiness John Paul II, and canonized by His Excellency XVI.) His mother, Mrs. Adela Tolentino de Guízar, a great aficionado, was the one who initiated the young Tito into a taste for Mexican music.
Tito Guízar was the first cousin of Pepe Guízar, the famous composer of “Guadalajara” and many other songs.
In 1924, his uncle Francisco Tolentino was interim governor of the state of Jalisco; With his contacts, the politician succeeded in making the 16-year-old nephew debut briefly but successfully as a singer at the Degollado theater in Guadalajara.
He had as his teachers renowned Mexican and Italian singers, including the famous tenor of Ópera Tito Schipa. Years later, Tito would arrive at the Carnegie Hall in New York. In the movie Marina (1945), version of the homonymous zarzuela, and accompanied by the soprano Amanda Ledesma, Tito shows acceptable skills of lyric tenor.
Tall, elegant, very polite, attractive, blond, blue-eyed, many considered him the Mexican version of Roy Rogers. He starred in one of the first national films that transcended borders: There in the Rancho Grande, with Esther Fernández as a young lady.
Back in the thirties, Guízar’s career took off in Hollywood. He was the conductor for seven years of one of the first bilingual programs of American radio on the CBS network. At that time he acted in several films of Paramount Pictures as a protagonist, alternating with famous actors such as Bob Hope, W.C. Fields, Virginia Bruce, Dorothy Lamour and Ray Milland. But his successes in the US they did not make him disassociate himself from his beloved Mexico.
He continued his career to an advanced age singing in palenques and nightclubs, as well as acting on television.
