Tippi Hedren

Nathalie “Tippi” Hedren (New Ulm, Minnesota, January 19, 1930) is an American actress, whose image is associated with Hitchcock’s film The Birds.

She was discovered by Alfred Hitchcock, who saw her in an advertisement for a diet drink when she was looking for a blonde actress, out of the ordinary and who looked like Grace Kelly, since the relationship with the latter cooled down after the prosperous mutual work realized in mythical films like the indiscreet window (1954) and perfect Crime (1954). Hedren starred in Hitchcock’s films The Birds (1963) and Marnie the Thief (1964). Until then he earned his living as an advertising model.

Tippi_Hedren’s Biography

Nathalie Hedren is the daughter of a Swedish father and a German-Norwegian mother. His father gave him the nickname “Tippi”, which comes from the Swedish “tupsa” -cariño-. She is the mother of the well-known actress Melanie Griffith, and therefore ex-mother-in-law of actors Don Johnson, Steven Bauer and Antonio Banderas, as well as grandma of actress Dakota Johnson (50 shades of Gray).

In her teens, Hedren served as a model on some catwalks in department stores. His parents moved to California at that time. As soon as she turned 20, she left for New York and began her career as a professional model. In less than a year, she made her feature film debut as an extra in the musical The Petty Girl (1950), although in the interviews she always says that her first film was Los pájaros. During her stay in New York, she met and married her first husband, Peter Griffith.

Working with Hitchcock

In 1963, Alfred Hitckcock, who was looking for someone to replace the actress Janet Leigh, who had starred in his previous film (Psycho, 1960), thought of Tippi Hedren, whom he had seen in a brand-name diet beverage ad Sego, to star in his movie The Birds, with Rod Taylor. The appearance, elegance and femininity of Hedren turned out to be a successful choice of the director of suspense for this film.

The filming was very hard and dangerous, according to Hedren’s own story; as an example, during the recording of the last scene in which the birds attack, Hitchcock forced her to repeat the scene numerous times while they were throwing real wood birds at her. One of them hit Hedren’s eye and caused a retinal spill even. It is believed that this annoyance with which Hitchcock made Hedren work was due to Hedren’s refusal to grant the director an intimate opportunity. After the scene, Hedren ended up so exhausted that she sat in the middle of the set and began to cry. She had to be taken to the emergency room. However, this hardness was rewarded when she won the Golden Globe for the revelation actress.

The following year, he stars, also under the direction of Hitchcock, the movie Marnie, the thief. After this film, and due in large part to the controlling obsession of Hitchcock, who even tried to direct Hedren’s professional career, manifesting a sexual harassment, because of this the relationship between the director and the actress cooled off (similar to the Grace Kelly case). According to the actress, Hitchcock sent her a final note telling her that she was going to ruin her career.

– “As they say in Hollywood, my name was hot [to be nominated for an Oscar]. But he told me he would ruin my career and he did it. He was one of the most powerful men in Hollywood and he got his way “,

– “It was a very uncomfortable situation that had nothing to do with love. I was the object of an obsession in which I was not interested. He followed me, analyzed my writing, stalked me. That was not love “

As of that moment, the producers who wanted to hire Hedren had to deal with Hitchcock, who told them that “she was not available”. However, Hedren also perceived the good side of Hitchcock saying:

– “Hitchcock had his good things. Not only was my director but my teacher. Everything he taught me was fabulous. And the people around him, incredible “
