Tim Kang was born in San Francisco, being a descendant of Koreans. He studied at the University of Berkeley (Berkeley, California), graduating with a B.A. in political science, and subsequently graduated with an M.F.A. in the A.R.T. Institute of Harvard University, he conducted acting classes at the Moscow Art Theater School.

He began his career as an actor working on an episode of The Sopranos (2002) and in the movie Two Weeks Notice (2002), starring Hugh Grant and Sandra Bullock. He has participated in other films such as The Forgotten (2004), starring Julianne Moore, and Rambo (2008), directed and starring Sylvester Stallone.

On television, after appearing in The Sopranos, he appeared in Law & amp; Order: Criminal Intent (2003), and worked on several episodes of the series Third Watch (2004), playing Detective Kent Yoshihara. He later made other appearances in series such as Law & amp; Order, Trial by Jury (2005), Ghost Whisperer (2006), Chappelle’s Show (2006), and Monk (2007). Since 2008, he plays actor Kimball Cho in the series The Mentalist.
