Thomas Edison Short Bio

Thomas Alva Edison (Milan, Ohio, February 11, 1847 – West Orange, New Jersey, October 18, 1931) was an entrepreneur and a prolific inventor, considered the most important inventor of U.S. He developed many devices that have had great influence around the world, such as the phonograph, the film camera or a durable incandescent light bulb. Nicknamed “The Wizard of Menlo Park”, Edison was one of the first inventors to apply the principles of chain production and large-scale teamwork to the invention process, which is why he is credited with creating the first laboratory of industrial research.

Edison was a prolific inventor who registered 1,093 patents to his name in the United States, in addition to others in the United Kingdom, France and Germany. But more important than his many patents was the broad impact of some of his inventions: electric light and public electricity supply, sound recording and cinematography became powerful new industries all over the world. His inventions contributed in particular to telecommunications, such as a voting machine, a battery for an electric car, electric power, recording music and movies. His advanced work in these fields was no more than a continuation of his first job as a radiotelegraphist. Edison developed a system of generation and distribution of electricity to homes, businesses and factories, a crucial advance for the modern industrialized world.
