The Waterboys is a band formed in 1983 by Mike Scott. His composition has always revolved around musicians from Scotland, England and Ireland. Its venues have alternated between Dublin, Spiddal, London, New York and Findhorn. His music has gone from a mixture of Celtic folk to rock’n’roll, always with a very personal style awarded by the talent of its leader Mike.
After ten years of recording and turning without interruption, in 1993 they dissolved and Mike Scott began his solo career. They were re-founded in 2000 and they continued to rotate and publish albums. For Mike, “There is no difference between Waterboys and me because, for me, they mean the same thing”.
The sound of the first Waterboys was called The Big Sound after a song from their second album, A Pagan Place. This style was described by Mike as “a metaphor for seeing the authorship of God in the world.” His influences are between Simple Minds, The Alarm, In Ta Nua, Big Country, Horhouse Flowers and World Party; the latter formed by ex-members of the Waterboys themselves. At the end of the 80’s the sound of the band became more folk.
Later they would return to the rock sound after its reform. His songs, mainly written by Scott, often deal with literary references related to spirituality (Mike studied English literature and philosophy). Both Mike’s solo career and those of his other members have been commercially successful, as well as good music critics. They have also influenced musicians such as Colin Meloy of The Decemberists, Grant Nicholas of Feeder, Miles Hunt of The Wonder Stuff; Bono and The Edge are also fans of the group.
