Tex Williams’s Biography

His real name was Sollie Paul Williams , and he was born in Ramsey, Illinois.

He is best known for his spoken blues style. His biggest hit was the humorous theme song “Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette),” which kept him at the top of the Billboard charts for six weeks in 1947. “Smoke” was the number five song on the Top 100 of the Billboard of 1947, and number one of the country list of that year. This song could be heard in the opening scenes of the 2006 movie Thank you for smoking.

Williams’ band, the Western Caravan, was composed of a dozen members, perfectly matched and with a great level of interaction between the various instruments, electric guitar, steel guitar, violins, bass, accordion, trumpet, and others (including, occasionally, a harp). At the beginning they recorded polkas for Capitol Records with limited success. This changed thanks to the good result of “Smoke, Smoke, Smoke”, written in large part by Merle Travis.

Tex Williams died of pancreatic cancer in 1985 in Newhall, Calif. He was buried in the Eternal Valley Memorial Park Cemetery in Newhall.
