Terry Ann “Teri” Garr (Lakewood, Ohio, December 11, 1947) is an American actress and comedian nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress in 1982 for the film Tootsie. He was also very popular for his performance in the movie Young Frankenstein (The Young Frankenstein).

First years

Garr was born in Lakewood, Ohio. His father, Eddie Garr (born Gonnoud), was a vaudeville artist, comedian and actor whose career reached the zenith with the lead role in the Broadway drama Tobacco Road. His mother, Phyllis Lind (born Emma Schmotzer), was a dancer and model, and Garr graduated from Magnificat High School, a female Catholic school located in Rocky River, Ohio. He attended the University of California and the Actor’s Studio, to expand his training.


Teri appeared in numerous films with different names in the credits (Terri Garr, Terry Garr, Teri Hope, or Terry Carr). His film debut was as an extra in 1963 with the film A Swingin ‘Affair. During his beginnings, he appeared in different Elvis Presley films, usually as a dancer; in one of them it coincided with a debutant Raquel Welch. She also had a cameo as a lady in the group movie The Monkees (Head). He also had a role in The Andy Griffith Show.

Other interventions were The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour, The Ken Berry ‘Wow’ Show, The Burns and Schreiber Comedy Hour, The Bob Newhart Show, and Barnaby Jones, among others. She also appeared on Saturday Night Live three times in the late 1970s and 1980s as well as on the David Letterman show.In the 1990s, she had a role in the series Friends as the strange biological mother of Lisa Kudrow .
