Educated in a public school, he studied “Oriental History” at the University of Cambridge. During World War II, Young participated in the battle of Arnhem, Holland, as tank commander.
In 1946 he was one of the directors of the film Theirs is the Glory, in which he recreated the battle of the Arnhem bridge (Arnhem was the home of the actress Audrey Hepburn in childhood and adolescence). During the filming of Sola in the Dark, Audrey Hepburn and Young joked that he had been attacking his favorite star without even knowing it.
Young started as a writer for British films in the 40s and 50s before directing several films for Irving Allen and Warwick Films studio by Albert R. Broccoli in the 1950s, such as The Red Beret with Alan Ladd. His association with Broccoli in these films was one of the reasons why he was offered to direct the first two James Bond films.
“Terence Young was James Bond” wrote Robert Cotton. There was some uncertainty about whether Young would fill the profile of Bond, the erudite and sophisticated murderer who wore Saville Row suits. Cotton commented as did Lois Maxwell in one of Connery’s many biographies: “Terence took Sean under his wing, took him to dinner and showed him how to walk, how to talk and even how to eat, many of the cast of us. we realized that Sean was representing the kind of character that Young had taught him. ” Other later films that Young directed were Mayerling (1968) and Inchon (1981). Young died of a heart attack at the age of 79 in Cannes, on the Côte d’Azur in France.
