Teena Marie, of Portuguese descent, grew up in Oakwood, Los Angeles, in a predominantly African-American environment. Rick James wrote and produced his first album Wild and Peaceful in 1979. The title I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love, a duet of both, was a success. Since there was no picture of her on the cover of the album, it was believed that she was a colored singer.

The departure of the record company had its continuation in the courts, whose result was called “Teena Marie Law” (Law of Teena Marie): a stamp can not retain an artist if nothing is published. He then worked with the label Epic Records, with which he continued to reap successes, both albums and singles. At the end of the 1980s his popularity was less, so he retired from the world of music to start a family. He had a daughter, Alia Rose.
Many of his hits were versioned in the 1990s by hip hop singers, for example Ooo La La de Fugees in his hit Fu-Gee-La (1996), as well as I Need Your Lovin by Sheena Easton (2000). ). In 2004 Teena Marie returned to the charts with a new album, La Dona, which reached number 6 on the charts.
