Mary Christine Brockert (Santa Monica, California, March 5, 1956 – Los Angeles, California, December 26, 2010) better known as Teena Marie , born and nicknamed Lady T was an American singer of R & B and soul, as well as a guitarist, composer and producer. Some of his most famous songs are Square Biz (1981), Lovergirl (1984) and Ooo La La La (1988), among others.

Due to her powerful voice, she was often confused by the radio audience with an African-American singer, which is why she was later awarded the title of “Queen of the White Soul”. He played several musical instruments, such as rhythm guitar, keyboards and congas. She also wrote, produced and arranged practically all of her songs from her album Irons In The Fire (1980), which have been sampled numerous times by contemporary artists of R & B and hip hop.

Teena Marie’s Biography

Teena Marie, of Portuguese descent, grew up in Oakwood, Los Angeles, in a predominantly African-American environment. Rick James wrote and produced his first album Wild and Peaceful in 1979. The title I’m Just a Sucker for Your Love, a duet of both, was a success. Since there was no picture of her on the cover of the album, it was believed that she was a colored singer.

After his fourth album, in 1981, he left his hitherto record label, Motown. The departure of the record company had its continuation in the courts, whose result was called “Teena Marie Law” (Law of Teena Marie): a stamp can not retain an artist if nothing is published. He then worked with the label Epic Records, with which he continued to reap successes, both albums and singles. At the end of the 1980s his popularity was less, so he retired from the world of music to start a family. He had a daughter, Alia Rose.

Many of his hits were versioned in the 1990s by hip hop singers, for example Ooo La La de Fugees in his hit Fu-Gee-La (1996), as well as I Need Your Lovin by Sheena Easton (2000). ). In 2004 Teena Marie returned to the charts with a new album, La Dona, which reached number 6 on the charts.

In 2008 he received the Pioneer Award from the Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
