Tarja Kaarina Halonen (n. Helsinki, December 24, 1943) is a Finnish lawyer and politician. She was President of Finland between 2000 and 2012, being the first woman in that position.

Halonen is a trade union lawyer. He graduated from the University of Helsinki in 1968 and has a Masters in Law. She was married after being elected president, with Dr. Pentti Arajärvi, with whom she had lived for a long time.

Tarja Kaarina Halonen was born on December 24, 1943 in a working class neighborhood known as Kallio, in the Finnish city of Helsinki, daughter of Vieno Olavi Halonen and Lyyli Elina Loimola. He graduated in Law from the University of Helsinki in 1968, obtaining a doctorate in law. She was the first secretary of Social Affairs and the secretary general of the National Union of Students (SYL) from 1969 to 1970, subsequently obtaining a position as a lawyer in the Central Organization of Finnish Trade Unions (SAK) from 1970 to 1974. In 1971 she joined to the Social Democratic Party of Finland.

In 1974, the Prime Minister of Finland Kalevi Sorsa elected her as parliamentary secretary. From then on, he began to gain knowledge of the world of Finnish politics, thus initiating his political career. From 1975 to 1996, he was a member of the Helsinki City Council. In 1979 was chosen deputy in the Parliament. Her first staging as a parliamentary deputy was to preside over the Social Committee from 1984 to 1987.

In 1987, Halonen became head of the Ministry of Health and Social Affairs within the government headed by Harri Holkeri, until 1990. Halonen also held the portfolio of the Ministry of Nordic Cooperation of Finland from 1989 until 1991, the year in which she was elected president of the Foundation for International Solidarity, a position she left in 2000. From 1990 to 1991, she acted as Minister of Justice in the government of Harri Holkeri. From 1995 until her election as President of Finland, she held the position of Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Paavo Lipponen. Halonen was elected president of Finland in the 2000 presidential election, defeating former Prime Minister Esko Aho. She was re-elected in the 2006 elections.
