Talib Kweli Short Bio

Talib Kweli Green , known as Talib Kweli was born on October 3, 1975 in Brooklyn, New York). He is one of the most prominent African-American rappers in underground rap, and his work has stood out not so much for commercial success but for frequent acclaim from critics. His name is Arabic, and means the seeker or student of truth and knowledge. His parents were teachers at school: his mother an English teacher and his father of sociology. As a young man, he appeared haggard, as well as De La Soul or other members of Native Tongues and soon began recording with producer Hi-Tek and rapper Mos Def, whom he knew from the institute.

With Mos Def (together they were known as Black Star), Kweli got a lot of success thanks to the album entitled just like them, Black Star, 1998. While Mos Def continued his successful solo career, Kweli released the album Reflection Eternal along with Hi-Tek in 2000. Two years later he recorded his solo debut, Quality, receiving some attention in the mainstream thanks to the single “Get By” produced by Kanye West. In 2004, Kweli released his second solo album, The Beautiful Struggle, with a somewhat more commercial production while the lyric rapper retains its strong political and social content. Kweli owns his own record label, called Blacksmith Records, and recently signed the successful rapper Jean Grae. Talib Kweli also appeared on Kanye West’s first solo album, The College Dropout, on the track “Get ‘Em High” and has collaborated with the group Black Eyed Peas on the song “Like That”. He also collaborated on the album 20/20 (Twenty Twenty) of Dilated Peoples, on the song Kidness For Weakness and his last collaboration was on the album that Spanish rapper Nach will launch in April 2011. He has also worked as a commercial and advertising image of Marc Ecko’s brand (Ecko Unlimited). In the videogame “Getting Up” he gave voice to the protagonist, Trane.
