Takashi Shimura’s Biography
He was born in Ikuno, Hyogo, Japan. He graduated in literature in 1930 from the University of Kansai (Osaka). His acting debut was in the film Akanishi Kakita (in 1936) and he was chosen in the Kenji Mizoguchi film Osaka Elegy in 1936.
Along with Toshirō Mifune, Shimura is the actor who is most associated with Akira Kurosawa. Shimura appeared in 21 of 30 Kurosawa films. His roles include the doctor in The Drunken Angel in 1948, the veteran detective in The Rabid Dog in 1949, the lawyer in Scandal in 1950, the woodcutter in Rashmon in 1950, the sick bureaucrat in Living in 1952 and the samurai in The Seven Samurai .
In fact, Kurosawa’s collaboration with Shimura, from 1943 to 1980, began earlier and lasted longer than his work with Mifune (1948-65). Shimura appeared in the director’s debut in the Sanshiro Sugata film in 1943, and Kurosawa’s last film in which he acted was Kagemusha in 1980 when Kurosawa specifically wrote a role for Shimura. The DVD release of the film by The Criterion Collection restored the shots of Shimura.
Apart from his work with Kurosawa, Shimura is probably best known for his roles in several Japanese monster movies, including in the first two Godzilla movies.
Shimura died on February 11, 1982 in Tokyo, Japan, of emphysema at age 76.
