Susan Solomon (January 19, 1956, Chicago) is an atmospheric chemistry that has worked most of her career for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Susan joined the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where she serves as Professor Ellen Swallow Richards of climate science and atmospheric chemistry, Solomon’s work was the first to propose the chlorofluorocarbon free radical reaction mechanism as a feasible cause of the Antarctic ozone hole. .
Solomon is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, the European Academy of Sciences, and the French Academy of Sciences, and in 2008, she was selected by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people in the world. He also serves on the Science and Safety Council of the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.
His interest in science began as a girl who watched The Underwater World by Jacques Cousteau In the secondary school, he was third at a national science fair, with a project that measured the percentage of oxygen in a mixture of gases.
He graduated in chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1977. He received his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1981, where he specialized in atmospheric chemistry.
He married Barry Sidwell in 1988.
She was director of the Chemistry and Climate Processes Group of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Division of Chemical Sciences until 2011, when she joined the Faculty of the Department of Earth, Atmospheric and Planetary Sciences at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
- The Coolest March: Scott’s Fatal Antarctic Expedition, Yale University Press, 2002 ISBN 0-300-09921-5 – Describes the story of Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his failed Antarctic expedition in 1912, also making a comparison between modern meteorological data and those experienced by Scott’s expedition, in an attempt to clarify the reasons for the demise of Scott’s polar departure.
- Aeronomy of the Middle Atmosphere: Chemistry and Physics of the Stratosphere and Mesosphere, 3rd Edition, Salmer, 2005 ISBN 1-4020-3284-6 – Describe the chemistry and physics of the middle atmosphere, between 10 km and the 100 km altitude.
The ozone hole
Solomon, working with colleagues at the NOAA Earth System Search Laboratory, postulated the mechanism of the Antarctic ozone hole, created by a heterogeneous reaction of ozone and chlorofluorocarbons free radicals on the surface of ice particles in high clouds over Antarctica. In 1986 and 1987, Solomon led the National Ozone Expedition to the McMurdo Strait, where the team gathered evidence to confirm the accelerated reactions, Susan was the only woman leader of the expedition, her team measured levels of chlorine oxide one hundred times higher than expected in the atmosphere, which had been released by the decomposition of chlorofluorocarbons by ultraviolet radiation.
He also showed that volcanoes could accelerate the reactions caused by chlorofluorocarbons, increasing the damage to the ozone layer, his work formed the basis of the Montreal Protocol of the UN, an international agreement to regulate harmful chemical substances and thus protect the ozone layer.
Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
She has served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, is co-author of the Third Assessment Report, and is also Professor of the Working Group and / or the Fourth Assessment Report.
