Stuart Zender’s Biography
Born on March 18, 1974, in Sheffield, England, in a family of strong musical orientation, Stuart Zender emigrated with his father to Philadelphia, United States with only seven years. During his adolescence, Stuart played drums in a punk band that played versions of the group Misfits. With 14 years he returned to the United Kingdom, to enter a school he would leave a year later. Around that time he had begun to take an interest in electric bass when a friend had lent him his collection of Weather Report records; the sound of his bassist Jaco Pastorius impressed him so much that he finally decided on this instrument, learning from note to note all the lines of the Black Market record, which Pastorius had recorded with Alphonso Johnson.
This period of initial learning was followed by a time when Zender, accompanied by some friends, played through the streets of London without much economic results, in addition to accompanying his sister in an amateur group of versions. With 17 years, Stuart Zender received the call of Nick Van Gelder, the original drummer of Jamiroquai, who introduced him to Jason Kay and the keyboardist of the group Toby Smith. The first track that Zender recorded for the group was “Too young to die”, a track that would end up appearing on the band’s debut album, entitled “Emergency on Planet Earth”. After three albums recorded with the group, a Grammy award and four MTV awards, Stuart Zender left Jamiroquai for reasons that have never been fully clarified, although it seems that it was a conflict for authors’ rights: Zender claims to have participated in the composition of the themes of the first three albums of the group, although this fact was never reflected neither in the credits of the album nor in the royalties.
After his departure from Jamiroquai during the recording of “Synchronized”, the fourth album of the band, Stuart Zender worked with several important figures in the industry, such as Stevie Wonder, Omar, Lauren Hill, Diana Ross, Gorillaz, Space Monkeys, Fela Kuti, Amy Winehouse or Mark Ronson, as well as forming a band called Azure, with which he signed a record contract with Virgin, but never released a single disc. He started his new project “Leroi”, with which he signed for the Geffen label, in addition to starting his collaboration as bassist and musical director of Mark Ronson’s band in 2006.
Recently Zender has created his own record label “White Buffalo Recordings” for which he is preparing material for a solo album. On the other hand, has signed a contract with the German firm Warwick Basses that has marketed a new model with the name of the bass player and has started a new project, with the name “Running out of Heroes”.
