Stuart Milner Barry Short Bio

Sir (Philip) Stuart Milner-Barry (September 20, 1906 – March 25, 1995) was a chess player, chess writer, decoder of the Second World War and British civil servant.

He was an officer of the Order of the British Empire, a companion of the Order of Bath and Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order. He worked at Bletchley Park during World War II and was director of “Hut 6”, a section responsible for deciphering messages that had been encrypted with the German enigma machine. He was one of the four main decoders in Bletchley at the request of then British Prime Minister Winston Churchill directly as more resources for his work. After the war he worked in the Treasury and later administered the British Honor System. In chess, he represented England in international tournaments and named two opening variants.
