Stockard Channing (February 13, 1944) is an American actress nominated for the Oscars and Golden Globes; Winner of three Emmy Awards and a Tony Award. She rose to fame for her portrayal of the young Betty Rizzo in the movie Grease 1978 alongside John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. She was consolidated for her role as First Lady Abbey Bartlet in the NBC television series The West Wing. He also highlighted his participation in theater with the role of Beddy Dollon in the musical Mamma Mia!

First years

Stockard Channing was born in New York, New York, United States, daughter of Lester Napier Stockard, a navigator tycoon and Mary Alice English. Susan grew up on the Upper East Side and earned her father’s fortune when he died in 1950. She was a student at The Chapin School, a prestigious girls school in Manhattan, and later The Madeira School in Virginia. Channing would study history and literature at Radcliffe College and graduate in 1965. She would marry her first boyfriend, Walter Channing, when she was 19, which would take her stage name from “Stockard Channing”, even after her divorce.

First years of career

Channing would begin her acting career with the experimental company Theater Company of Boston with which she performed the off-Broadway play Adaptation / Next. In 1971, he would make his Broadway debut with John Guare’s Two Gentlemen of Verona. Channing would make his debut on Sesame Street and later got his lead role in 1973 with the telefilm The Girl Most Likely To …, a black comedy written by Joan Rivers.

After a series of small interpretations in films, Channing would co-star alongside Warren Beatty and Jack Nicholson Mike Nichols’ film “Two Pillars and an Inheritance (1975). But it would be in 1978, at the age of 33 years, when he would get the role that would launch him to fame: that of the young Betty Rizzo in the musical film Grease. This role gave her the award for best supporting actress in the People’s Choice Awards. That same year she played the role of Peter Falk’s secretary in A Cheap Detective.

In the shadow of Rizzo

Channing would star in two sitcoms for CBS between 1979 and 1980: Stockard Channing in Just Friends and The Stockard Channing Show. After a couple of unproductive experiences in Hollywood, Channing returned to his theatrical roots. After triumphing with the Broadway play, They’re Playing Our Song (1980-81), she repeated that success as the mother of Peter Nichols’ play A Day in the Death of Joe Egg. That allowed her to win the 1985 Tony Award for best actress.

Channing continued his successful return to the stage by working again with John Guare. In fact, she would receive two more Tony nominations for her work on The House of Blue Leaves (1986) and Six Degrees of Separation (1990) (for which she would win the Obie Award.) Channing would alternate her work for television and be nominated to the Emmy Awards for the CBS miniseries Echoes in the Darkness (1987) and would win the CableACE Award for the work of Harvey Fierstein Tidy Endings (HBO, 1988).

Channing’s film career would take an unexpected turn in 1993 when she was nominated for the Oscars and the Golden Globes for her performance as an art dealer on the Upper East Side in Six Degrees of Separation. From there, the roles in Hollywood multiplied with titles like To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (with Patrick Swayze) and Smoke (with Harvey Keitel) (1995); a small cameo in The First Wives Club, Intimate and Personal (with Robert Redford and Michelle Pfeiffer), and Moll Flanders (1996).

Channing also had multiple offers of television and theater. She starred in the USA Network telefilm An Unexpected Family and her sequel An Unexpected Life in 1998. She was nominated for the Independent Spirit Award for best supporting actress for her work as a sterile couple in The Baby Dance (1998). In addition, in theater, he worked at Lincoln Center on the work of Tom Stoppard Hapgood (1995) and on the 1997 adaptation of Lillian Hellman’s The Little Foxes. During this period, he voiced the character of Barbara Gordon in the series Batman Beyond, and appeared in an episode of the series King of the Hill.

Channing was nominated again for the Tony Awards three times for Six Degrees of Separation (1990), Four Baboons Adoring the Sun (1992) and The Lion in Winter (1999).

In 1999, Stockard Channing would accept the role of First Lady Abbey Bartlet in the NBC series The West Wing. He started as a guest star in the first two seasons but became a regular character in 2001. In the seventh and final season The West Wing (2005-2006), Channing appears in only six episodes because he already co-starred in the CBS sitcom Out of Practice with Henry Winkler.

Channing received different awards in 2002. Among them, the Primetime Emmy as a supporting actress in dramas for The West Wing. That same year, she won another Emmy and the Screen Actors Guild Award for her portrayal of Judy Sheppard in The Matthew Shepard Story, a docudrama on the death of Matthew Shepard.
