Stewart Armstrong Copeland (Alexandria, Virginia, July 16, 1952) is an American musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist known for being one of the original members of the British rock trio The Police. / p>
He is widely regarded as one of the best and most influential rock drummers of all time. His performance in the instrument influenced famous drummers such as Joey Jordison, Travis Barker, Chad Smith, Taylor Hawkins, Marco Minnemann, Alex Gonzalez, among others.
Despite being left-handed, Copeland plays the drums like a right-handed drummer. During his years with The Police, he became known for playing only the hi hat with bass drum to keep pace on many tracks. He is a master of syncopated rhythm; no other rock drummer has executed the hi hat as brilliantly as he did. In addition, it is a pioneer in the use of splash cymbals and octoban drums.
In January 2011, Stewart Copeland was chosen as the second best drummer in the history of rock, according to the list of the 10 most outstanding drummers, prepared by the musical magazine Q.
Stewart Armstrong Copeland, was born on July 16, 1952, in Alexandria, Virginia. The youngest of four brothers and son of Miles Copeland Jr., former CIA agent, and trumpeter of Glenn Miller Orchestra, and Lorraine Adie, archaeologist.
Stewart Copeland started playing drums at the age of 8, performing his first show at 12, as a drummer for The Nomads, at the American Beach Club in Beirut, Lebanon. Previously, Stewart was the drummer of several progressive rock groups between the late ’60s and the early’ 70s, most remembered being in Curved Air between 1975 and 1976.
Founding member of The Police, along with Sting and Henri Padovani (later replaced by Andy Summers). Alternately to his stay at The Police he published several EPs under the pseudonym Klark Kent, and later The Police was part of bands like “Animal Logic” or the most recent “Oysterhead”, along with the bassist and singer of “Primus”, Les Claypool and the guitarist and singer of “Phish”, Trey Anastasio.
