Steve Vai’s Biography
During his youth, Vai became interested in rock greats such as Jimmy Page, Brian May, Alice Cooper and Jimi Hendrix that fostered his interest in learning guitar. Before joining the Berklee College of Music, Vai took lessons with rising guitarist Joe Satriani and played in many local bands. During this time he acquires the influence of guitarists like Jeff Beck and fusion guitarist Allan Holdsworth.
Born on June 6, 1960 in Long Island, New York (he turned six on the sixth day of the sixth month of 1966, as he said in the introduction to his book of transcriptions by Frank Zappa).
At age 12, Steve is attracted to the instrument that later became his profession: the guitar. This makes him start taking classes, with Joe Satriani who was 16 years old. This is where Vai’s career as a guitarist begins.
Steve Vai won the general recognition working for the legendary musician, producer and composer Frank Zappa. At first Vai only did the transcriptions of his guitar parts. When he was twenty years old, Frank asked Vai to join the band. Tells an anecdote that Steve told him: “Frank, want to be like you”, to which Zappa replied: “Impossible, you are too young to be bald”.
At the beginning of the 1980s he left Zappa’s band and recorded his first solo album, “Flex-Able”, and replaced Yngwie J. Malmsteen as solo guitarist at Alcatrazz. Shortly after he released his second solo album “Flex-Able Leftovers” with songs recorded during the preparation of his first album but finally not included. He then joined Van Halen’s former frontman, David Lee Roth, to record two albums, “Eat them and smile” and “Skyscraper”, as well as a Spanish version of the first one titled “Wild Smile.” In 1986 he jumped to the big screen appearing in the legendary final duel of the film Crossroads (Crossroads or Crossroads) director Walter Hill where he played the role of the devil guitarist called Jack Butler faced a young man virtuoso guitarist of the school of Julliard in a guitarristic duel Ralph Macchio (famous for his role in Karate Kid). In this film Vai interacts performing with Ry Cooder who plays the part of Ralph Macchio, and William Kanengiser performing the classical guitar parts, including “Eugene’s Trick Bag” composed by William Kanengiser the first half of the arpeggios and the second half the Vai himself, based on Paganini’s Capricho No. 5, the crossroads duel was performed in live concerts with Mike Keneally
He later played for Whitesnake and the legendary singer David Coverdale on the album “Slip of the tongue” (1989) and in 1990 he recorded his third album “Passion and Warfare” getting worldwide attention in his solo career. At this time he won a Grammy for his participation in the tribute album to Zappa “Zappa’s Universe”, for his solo on “Sofa”, being criticized by several musicians awarding recognition to Mike Keneally, for his participation in that album.
In 1991 he participated with Joe Satriani among others in the Legends of the Guitar concert organized for the celebration of the Universal Exposition of Seville 1992 (Expo’92).
In 1993 appears the album titled “Sex & Religion”, with a new formation, Devin Townsend (voice), Terry Bozzio (drums) and T.M.Stevens (bass). Leave aside the solo style with a more dynamic band. It is a mostly vocal album, and partly controversial for the content of its lyrics, in which it refers to sex and religion.
In the year 1995 Steve records an album titled “Alien Love Secrets”, of which, later he presents a DVD version with the videos of the songs that make up this album. The album consists of seven instrumental tracks, and was recorded in six weeks.
In September of 1996 “Fire Garden” is published. Embodying a new band and style. An extensive disc of 18 subjects, treating the first half of instrumental subjects and the second incorporating sung songs, and securing Steve in his facet of singer.
Also in 1996 he participated in the tour called G3 with Joe Satriani (the organizer) and Eric Johnson, where Mike Keneally accompanies him on keyboards and guitar. A live album of the same name is recorded. “

Later, in 2004, Steve Vai launches his second live album, “Live In Astoria: London”, where he selects recordings of his performances at the Astoria in London, compiling them on this album. He did one more time with Joe Satriani, a G3 tour, taking this opportunity as a guest to the legendary Robert Fripp.
His album released in 2005 is titled “Real Illusions: Reflections” and to present it he made a world tour with musicians of great category, such as Tony Macalpine (guitar and keyboards), Billy Sheehan (bass), Jeremy Colson (drums and percussion ) and Dave Weiner (electric and acoustic guitar), in that same year participates in a new G3 alongside Satriani and John Petrucci.
In 2006 he participates in a tour tribute to Frank Zappa, organized by the son of the latter, Dweezil.
In 2007 he recorded the double album “Sound Theories Vol.& II”.
Vai with the guitar brand Ibanez created the JEM series in 1986, also designing the first seven-string guitar for the brand, called Ibanez Universe UV77MC. Also along with Ibanez the first and only three-masted guitars, called JEM Tripleneck, were developed. The use in live of this type of guitars (in the G3 of the 2003) marks the guideline of the level that has reached Steve. In 2000, together with Carvin, he created his own series of amplifiers called Legacy according to his specifications.
Today, Steve is one of the leading representatives of Ibanez worldwide, and has made this factory one of the largest and most important worldwide, thanks to Your promotion of it using your Signature models. On October 24, 1997, he played live at the party celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Ibanez, an event that took place at the Nissin Power Station in Japan, with the collaboration of the prestigious Tama brand of batteries. This event included 2 important guitar stars: the legendary Paul Gilbert, and Andy Timmons, who was part of the lineup of the band that would play in that event. Both Gilbert and Timmons are two of the most recognized guitarists today and both are users of Ibanez guitars, having their own Signature models as well as Vai.
