Steve Ditko’s Biography

Ditko studied at the School of Cartoonists and Illustrators in New York under Jerry Robinson and began professionally in 1953. His first works were in Charlton Comics , producing stories of science fiction, horror and mystery. Ditko then started working on what would eventually become the Marvel Comics company.

He collaborated with the creation of characters such as Spiderman and Doctor Strange for the Marvel. His idiosyncratic style of drawing accentuating mode and anxiety found favor with readers. The character of Spiderman with his anxiety, anguish and his hectic social life linked well the personal style of Ditko and the interests that Marvel ended up thanking, taking this reputation as co-writer in the last stage of his career. After a four-year career with this title, Ditko leaves the company.

He returned to Charlton, where he created some titles such as Captain Atom, Blue Beetle, Mr. A and The Question. In the pages of Mr. A and The Question Ditko he began to infuse his own philosophy, which was rooted in the objectivism of Ayn Rand.

In 1968, Ditko was creating for DC Comics where he created characters such as The Creeper, The Falcon and the Dove. Ditko used these characters, from the genre of superheroes, to expose and explore various ethical issues. However, because several readers found the sermons in several of these intractable stories, or perhaps because they did not agree with the artist’s philosophy, Ditko’s work did not have the same popularity as before. His works lost regularity in DC in the 70s, creating a short story Shade, the Changing Man, which was revived several years later without the intervention of Ditko.

The name of the character “Mr. A” has its origin in the philosophical Aristotelian identity principle (“A is equal to A”). This principle is also basic in the objectivism (the philosophical system created by Ayn Rand), since objectivism is a development of the philosophical premises created by Aristotle. “Mr. A” is a character dressed entirely in white and of total moral integrity (the same one that demands objectivism).

Ditko currently resides in New York. Although he is a prolific artist, he is very jealous of his privacy. He prefers that his work speak for him, so he usually rejects interviews, monographs and public appearances.
