Born Sterling Relyea Walter in Upper Montclair, New Jersey; He was the son of George and Frances Walter. After the death of his father, he was adopted at age nine by James Hayden, renamed Sterling Walter Hayden . In his childhood, he lived in New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington, DC, and Maine. In this last place, he was studying at the Wassookeag School, in Dexter, Maine.
Hayden was an adventurer and a man of action, with nothing to envy the characters he played later in the cinema. At age 17, he escaped on a ship to see the world and became a fisherman in the great terraces of Newfoundland. Afterwards, he served as a sailor, going around the world several times.
In the 1940s, Hayden would become a model and soon after would sign a contract with Paramount Studios. In his first film, he would meet Madeleine Carroll, whom he would fall in love with and whom he would marry. But after a couple of films, he would leave Hollywood to serve as a secret agent under William J. Donovan at the OSS. Hayden would enlist in the Marine Corps under the name of John Hamilton (never with his real name). His services in the Second World War include technical advice to the Yugoslav partisans and as a paratrooper in Croatia. He received the Silver Star and a recognition for Marshal Tito’s Yugoslavia.
His admiration for the communist partisans made him spend a short time as a member of the Communist Party of the United States. According to his biography, in the witch hunt he collaborated with the Committee of Un-American Activities, confessing names of their links within the party. His wife at the time, Betty Denoon, defended her husband, arguing that the names her partner quoted were already in the hands of the Committee, which had a copy of the list of members of the Communist Party. In any case, Hayden repudiated his own collaboration with Maccarthism.
At that time, Sterling Hayden would begin his cinematic golden age, and his figure was already recognized. Thus, he starred in films as exceptional as John Huston’s Asphalt Jungle, Nicholas Ray’s Johnny Guitar, or Stanley Kubrick’s Perfect Beating. That golden decade of 1950 ended with the divorce of his wife Betty Denoon. The verdict of the trial granted the actor custody of the couple’s four children: Christian, Dana, Gretchen and Matthew.
In the 1960s he would marry Catherine Devine McConnell, with whom he would share his life until his death and with whom he would have two children, Andrew and David. At that time, Hayden would retire from the cinema, live on his ship and write his autobiography entitled Wanderer, published in 1963.
In the 1970s, he would appear in the role of Captain McCluskey in The Godfather and later would follow his career in television on NBC, with The Tomorrow Show, with Tom Snyder. In 1976 he participated in the ambitious production Novecento by Bernardo Bertolucci, within a long establishment of stars, and in 1980 he rubbed shoulders with Jane Fonda in the hit comedy How to eliminate his boss.
Around 1969, Hayden bought a boat in the Netherlands and would live between Paris, Connecticut and his apartment in Sausalito, California. In 1976 he published his novel Voyage: A Novel of 1896.
In 1986, Sterling Hayden died of prostate cancer in Sausalito, California, at the age of 70.
