Stella Adler (February 10, 1901, although she may have been born in 1898 or 1899 – December 21, 1992) was an American actress, considered for decades as one of the most outstanding female teachers in interpretation.
Born in New York, Adler was a member of the dynasty of interpreters of American Jewish origin Adler, daughter of Sara and Jacob P. Adler, sister of Luther and Jay Adler, and half sister of Charles Adler. Jacob and Sara Adler were two of the best actors in the American Yiddish Theater. They were a significant part of a theatrical movement that thrived in New York from the late nineteenth century until well into the 1950s. Stella was destined to be the most famous and influential member of the family. He began his acting career at four years of age, and concluded it fifty-five years later, in 1961. During that time, and also years later, Stella Adler devoted himself to the teaching of interpretation.
She was the only American actress who received interpretation classes from Konstantin Stanislavski. He was an important member of the Group Theater, but differences of opinion with Lee Strasberg on the correct teaching of the Stanislavski system (later known as the Stanislavski Method), contributed to the later dissolution of the group. Adler’s biggest controversy with Strasberg was whether an actor should use emotional memory (defended by Strasberg), remembering personal experience to achieve a credible result or, conversely, living the moment (through imagination), using the partner and the space to create a compelling performance.
Between 1926 and 1952 Adler acted regularly on Broadway. With respect to cinema, he only appeared in three films, Love on Toast (1937), Shadow of the Thin Man (1941), and My Girl Tisa (1948).
She was married three times: the first with Horace Eliascheff, father of her only daughter, Ellen, the second with Harold Clurman, famous director and theater critic and one of the founders of the legendary Group Theater, and the last with Mitchell A Wilson, physicist and writer who died in 1973.
Adler died in Los Angeles, California, due to heart failure in 1992, and was buried in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Glendale, New York.
The study center that Adler founded still works in New York and Los Angeles. His method, based on the imagination of the actor, has been studied by many renowned actors, such as Robert De Niro, Martin Sheen, Roy Scheider, Vincent D’Onofrio, Mark Ruffalo, Warren Beatty, and Benicio del Toro, in addition to Marlon Brando , who was president of honor until his death. Adler had been Brando’s first acting teacher, who knew her thanks to her sister, Jocelyn, who studied drama with her. Adler’s legacy continues with the work of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting.
