James Hugh Loden , known as Sonny James (May 1, 1928 – February 22, 2016), was a popular American country musician and composer. for his 1957 song Young Love. Nicknamed “Southern Gentleman” (“The Southern Gentleman”) for his charisma and kindness, his greatest success came when he composed love songs James managed to place 72 of his productions on the charts between 1953 and 1983, including a streak of unprecedented five years of 16 singles number 1 among his 26 singles No. 1. 21 of his albums reached the top ten of Country Music from 1964 to 1976. James was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1961. He was presented at the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2007.

Musical beginnings

James Hugh Loden was born on May 1, 1928 in Alabama, his parents being Archie Lee ‘Pop’ Loden and Della Burleson Loden, in charge of a 300-acre farm outside of Hackleburg, Alabama. His parents were amateur musicians and his sister Thelma Lee Loden Holcombe also played instruments and sang from childhood. At the age of three, he already played the mandolin and sang being called “Sonny Boy”. In 1933, the family appeared on a radio program which aired regularly on Saturdays prior to Muscle Shoals at the WMSD-AM station in Alabama. Around that time, their parents volunteered to raise a girl from Alabama called Ruby Palmer, being in this way part of the musical group and singing with the Loden Family, later known as Sonny Loden and the Southerners (the Southerners), singing in theaters, auditoriums and schools throughout the South of the United States.

By this time the half-time musical presentations were already support for the family, but they returned after the tours to work on the family farm. A few years later, the father decided that they were professional musicians and they dedicated themselves full-time. I raid the farm and took a daily place on the radio at the KLCN station, where at dawn they accompanied the early birds’ awakening. Then they had programs on several radio stations around the South. In 1949, they returned to Alabama, with a show on the WSGN radio station in Birmingham, Alabama. Near the Christmas season of that year, the two girls were married in West Memphis, Arkansas in a double ceremony and left the group. The parents found other girls who took their places, but the group disbanded (the parents returned Hackleburg and opened a clothing store, where James worked while finishing the final year of high school.) During the summer of 1950, he worked with a band, sometimes singing but was more used to playing the guitar in Memphis, Tennessee on the WHBQ radio station.

On September 9, 1950, his career was interrupted by the Korean War, when he was called by the National Guard unit of Alamaba. After military service in Korea, he moved to Nashville where he spent a week with Chet Atkins and his wife. He had settled with Atkins in his beginnings at Raleighm Carplina del Nirte when they played at the same radio station. Atkins invited Capitol Records executive Ken Nelson to meet for dinner. James commented: “After dinner Chet and I played our wooden guitars, we played few songs that I had written, while Chet said to Ken:” What do you think about this, Ken? “And he said:” I would like to record it. ” He said he had to change his name to have professional credibility because there were several musicians called Londen, Louden or Luden and that “James” could be easy to remember. “Children could remember Sonny James.” This is how his first studio recording was released. as Sonny James, Nuebtras appeared in Louisiana Rayride, met the musician Slim Whitman, and James performed by singing and singing, getting a strong response from the audience, so Williams invited him to the front of the band for his new tour. Whitman’s group for two months, when Whitman felt he could work at any club without the band paying him, the Loden family had a presentation at a school with Sonny joining in with a few hows until Whitman could find a substitute. For the rest of his career he would never show up at a club. For the next few years he had several songs that were very good for the Country Music charts and he developed his career with live performances at the Country Music shows. He appeared on the radio, including Big D Jamboree, before switching to the important medium that appeared at that time: television, where he had frequent and successful appearances in the Ozark Jubilee program in Springfield, Missouri, beginning in October 1955.

Following his great streak of hits number 1, he is also remembered for the hit song at the No. 6 “A Little Bit South of Saskatoon” that the 1977 comedy with Päul Newman of the Slap Shot hockey.
