Sonja Henie – Born in Oslo, Norway, on April 8, 1912 and died in this same city on October 12, 1969, victim of leukemia. Olympic skating champion three times, ten times world champion (1927-1936) and six times European champion (1931-1936). She also developed an extensive career as an actress.

Sonja Henie’s Biography

Sonja Henie was born in Cristiania (present-day Oslo), was the daughter of Wilhem Henie, once World Cycling Champion and prosperous fur trader. His father hired the best coaches in the world including the Russian dancer Tamara Karsavina, to turn his daughter into a sports celebrity. She achieved the gold medal in three consecutive Olympic Games. At the 1924 Olympic Games in Chamonix, France, Sonja occupied the eighth place but with only eleven years and being already champion of her country. To the next edition of the Olympic Games, Sonja went as world champion (achieved in 1927 with only 14 years) and achieved her first Olympic gold medal. From that moment he would get two more Olympic gold medals in the following Games.

Sonja was the first skater to adopt as dress the skirts characteristic of the current skaters and to perform elaborate choreographies. His innovative technique and his glamorous style transformed the sport of skating and turned it into a legend of this sport. She was also a good tennis player.

Henie became so popular that the police had to intervene in his public appearances to control the great mass of fans. After her third Olympic gold medal in the Games of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, in 1936, Sonia went on to professionalism participating in various shows where she achieved great success, especially in the United States. In 1938 he published his autobiography, which was reissued and republished in 1954. In 1941 he achieved American citizenship. He retired from the performances in 1958 with the film Hello, London.

Personally, he married three times, with Dan Topping, Winthrop Gardiner, and finally with the rich patron of Norwegian art Niels Onstad in 1956. Together they settled in Oslo where they accumulated an important collection of modern art that served for the creation of the Henie-Onstad Art Center in Høvikodden, near Oslo.

In the mid-60s he was diagnosed with leukemia, which would cause his death in 1969 at the age of 57 years during a flight between Paris and Oslo.
