Gloria Simonetti Mazzarelli (Santiago, January 5, 1948) is a Chilean singer of popular music, sister of the prominent equador Américo Simonetti. He won the international contest of the Festival of the Song of Viña del Mar in 1969.

Simonetti’s Biography

Its beginnings were in 1967, in university festivals, mainly in the Catholic University of Chile, where it studied Advertising.

His first professional performance was in 1968 at the Festival of the Song of Viña del Mar, where he competed with the song «For when you come back», by Julio Zegers. On that occasion, she was booed by the public, encouraged by press articles that criticized that she came from a wealthy family. When compared to Luz Eliana, a popular singer who also participated in the competition that year, a journalist titled a note with: «Luz Eliana, a girl who sings well; Gloria Simonetti, a good girl who sings ». In spite of everything, it obtained the second place.

A year later, he won the first place in that musical contest with the song “Mira, mira” by Scottie Scott, it was his reunion with the public, as he also took silver gulls, the typical trophy of that musical contest, for the song, interpretation, orchestration, female singer and costumes. This marked the definitive takeoff of his career.

Such was his success that year the director Germán Becker added her to the cast of the film Ayúdeme usted compadre, one of the films that has had the best box office in Chile, as far as national cinema is concerned. In 1971, she was the first popular music singer to perform a concert at the Municipal Theater of Santiago, with great acceptance from the public and specialized critics. That presentation resulted in the album Gloria in the Municipal, one of the main ones of her career.

That same year, he toured all over Chile with the Argentine singer Sandro.

Then he competed in festivals in Puerto Rico, Benidorm and Bulgaria, where he had very good participations, especially in the first country mentioned, where he achieved second place among several competitors.

He also had outstanding performances on TV shows such as Sábado Gigantes, Canturreando, La gran canción and Recital, where his concert was considered the best.

Another of his great successes was his version of “Ojalá”, by Cuban troubadour Silvio Rodríguez. The singer had a hard time presenting this song on television, during the years of the military regime. The producers told him that it was very metaphorical. But she did her best and she did it in 1979, in the program Vamos a Ver, which was hosted by Raúl Matas, on National Television.

In 2005, he produced and wrote Súbete a la vane verde a musical about the life of San Alberto Hurtado.

Her first husband, from whom she separated, was Cristián del Campo, with whom she had her only son Cristián, who today is a Jesuit priest and chaplain of the NGO Un Techo para Chile. Her second husband, Jorge Nogués, died in an accident after 24 years of marriage.

Today is still more current than ever and has its own singing academy that bears his name, in Viña del Mar, where he prepares future singers. He was part of the jury of the program Cantando por un sueño (2007), on Canal 13 (Chile).

In November 2007, she celebrated with great success her 40 years of career with concerts in Santiago, Viña del Mar and Concepción, an opportunity that she took advantage of to launch a new production with a compilation with her greatest successes and two songs composed especially for her. by the author Daniel Guerrero.

In June 2009 he released his record work, entitled Gracias a ustedes, where he pays tribute to Chilean musicians. Instrumentalists such as Valentín Trujillo (piano), Ángel Parra (guitar), Tito Francia (piano), Andrés Silva (drums) and Gustavo Bosch (trumpet), among others, participated with her on the album. In October 2009, he toured all over the country presenting this work, through live concerts, the first of which will be held at the Teatro Oriente de Santiago.
