Silverchair Short Bio
Silverchair was an Australian rock band from Merewether (Newcastle), formed in 1992 with the name of Innocent Criminals, with Ben Gillies as drummer, Chris Joannou as bassist and Daniel Johns as lead singer and guitarist. . The group made its breakthrough in mid-1994 when they won a national demos competition conducted by the Nomad television program of SBS TV and ABC’s Triple J radio station. The band was hired by the record company Murmur, and was successful on the Australian and international rock stages.
As of 2011, Silverchair has won a record twenty-one ARIA Music awards, out of a total of forty-nine nominations. The band has also received six APRA awards, and Johns won three song composition awards at the 2008 ceremony. His five studio albums have come in first place in the ARIA Album Charts: Frogstomp (1995), Freak show (1997), Neon ballroom (1999), Diorama (2002) and Young modern (2007). In addition, three of the singles of the group have reached number 1 in the ARIA Singles Chart: «Tomorrow» (1994), «Freak» (1997) and «Straight lines» (2007).
The sound of Silverchair has evolved throughout his career, with different styles in his different albums, which were constantly becoming more ambitious and went from grunge in its beginnings to show orchestral and art rock influences. The composition and singing of Johns have constantly improved, along with the increase in the complexity of the band’s sounds. In 2003, after the publication of the disc Diorama, the band announced a recess, in which the members were part of different projects: The Dissociatives, The Mess Hall, and Tambalane. Silverchair returned to meet at Wave Aid concerts in 2005, and in 2007 they did the Across the Great Divide tour with Powderfinger. In May of 2011 the band announced an indefinite interruption, time in which their total sales exceeded six million albums.
